Last night I watched 'The Princess and The Frog' an over-hyped, C-average of a movie. Granted I am not 12 years old, and outside of the target audience. Still, I expect to be entertained by a movie that is nominated for three academy awards, including best song. The best song nomination I had to look up after the movie, because I couldn't tell which song it was! Maybe I am old and jaded, but the plot was entirely predictable. There were some psychedelic villain scenes, which convinced me I was simply too sober to enjoy the movie properly. I should have taken my medicine beforehand. Overall the music was a disappointment. There are good songs, especially the zydeco/Cajun in the bayou, but not enough. These snippets left me wanting more, while the over-produced main songs left me bored and distracted. Finally, the oft repeated "great message" of the movie, work hard and appreciate family is such a reflection on the lackluster economy I was depressed. Right now I am enjoying escapism in my movies, not John Henry work ethic.
Listened to The Dead Weather 'Horehound' this morning. Jack White is a genius. That album is actually very bad for me, because listening to it at 10 in the morning makes me want to go to the nearest bar and hop on the back of the first motorcycle I see. "You drive me so reckless, you'll kill us all" and "You're so cold and dangerous, but I can't leave you be, you've got the kind of loving I need constantly" Lyrics like this make the sky cloud over. When I can control the weather this is the music I will play for a thunderstorm, with the drums as lightening. The music sounds ramdom at times, but comes together with Alison's amazing voice in all the right places. I heard an inkling of a new album by the group and I must must check it out. Music to ruin your life too, what Rock should be.
